Flipper lenses

Flipper lenses are a very important tool in vision training. You train your eyes to focus and zoom, at home or during a programme with your vision therapist.

What it trains

• Accommodation – the eyes’ ability to focus and zoom in when the focusing demand changes.
• Accommodative facility – quick, accurate focus changes between plus and minus lenses.
• Accommodative control – the ability both to activate and to relax the eyes’ focusing.
• Binocular accommodation – changing focus with both eyes while keeping the image clear and single.
• Monocular accommodation – changing focus with one eye at a time.

Who it is for

Do you find it hard to change focus from, say, your phone up to the TV – does it take a moment before it is sharp? Quick focus changes are also important in most sports. Accommodation that has weakened with age, however, cannot be trained back to “young eyes”.

How to use them

• Start with the lowest power (±1.00). Focus through the plus lenses, flip, and focus through the minus lenses.
• Keep the same distance to the text the whole time.
• When you can focus through both pairs of lenses, move on to ±1.50 – then ±2.00, ±2.50 and finally ±3.00.
• Use an eye patch when you train one eye at a time.

Good to know

• Supplied in plastic bags.
