Occluder paddle – frosted

The frosted (translucent) occluder paddle is used for testing. The person being tested cannot focus through the frosted surface, while the tester can see what the covered eye does when it is “relaxed”.

What it is used for

• Cover test (phoria/tropia/orthophoria) – indispensable when assessing how the eyes are used and what happens when one eye is covered.
• Monocular testing of smooth pursuit eye movements – when the smooth pursuits need to be tested for each eye.
• Sighting eye test (the dominant eye) – the eyes are covered in turn to find the sighting eye.

Who it is for

Primarily for professional use: for testing each eye separately and what happens when both eyes can focus again.

How to use it

• When testing for strabismus, the angle of deviation and latent strabismus.
• When testing eye movements for each eye, the tester can follow the covered eye at the same time. Here it is used together with a Wolff wand.

• Made of a special material that is frosted just enough that the person being tested cannot focus through it, while the eye’s movements behind it can still be followed.
